NFC Championship Game
San Francisco 49ers 7,
Philadelphia Eagles 31
January 29, 2023, Lincoln Financial Field
If Salvador Dali had a chance to paint an NFL game, it would have been a collage of today's contest between the 49ers and the Eagles. From the initial failure by Shanahan to challenge what had been ruled a complete pass, which led to a touchdown, to Purdy's elbow injured on a sack, to yet another backup QB, Josh Johnson's concussion protocol, this game was pure surrealism.
Murphy's Law is an adage that is typically stated as: "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong." It is sometimes extended to "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong, and at the worst possible time."
Such was the case in today's game. The freakish elbow injury to Brock Purdy, trivial but costly penalties, and some plain old-fashioned bad bounces and bad luck, victory was not in the cards for the 49ers. On another day, we'd whip the Eagles. They're over-rated -- a good but not great outfit.
I'm not ready to describe the game in the customary detail, but if you're a fan of horror movies, watch the video-link, below. The Niners' had QBs Trey Lance, Jimmy Garoppolo, Brock Purdy and Josh Johnson all unable to perform over the course of the season. (Kudos to QB #5, Christian McCaffery for his game effort today). It's hard to win at cards without your Aces, especially when your opponent knows it.
Congrats to the 49ers and every player who gallantly represented San Francisco through a rough and tumble, dramatic and impressive season. The Niners confounded the experts week after week, Just ask Dallas. "For of all sad words of tongue or pen, The saddest are these: 'It might have been!' (John Greenleaf Whittier). But you’ll learn more from a failure than from guessing what might have been. Go Niners!

Letters to the Editor
Need A County Western Ballad
Any Country and Western song will do. How about Coal Miner's Daughter? Is that sad enough? That's the right genre for me after today's game.
No actual quarterbacks, Purdy or Johnson, (or JimmyG or Trey), no key runner (Mitchell), Warner gets hurt, Bosa gets hurt -- and you know they stayed in because that's who they are, not because they felt better. Throw in a couple of bogus calls and you can feel a little down.
Anyway, this was/is a great 49er team, with so much talent, star power and chemistry. I'm Back! "Kittle Ain't Brittle" -- that's my new tune -- forget C&W. Whew! I got over that fast!

Football is Over

A Baseball Exhibit From Your Living Room

George Krevsky is the perfect person to utilize the “designated curator” form of baseball art. And so his Art of Baseball: Hot Stove League exhibit now is available through March 30 at georgekrevskygallery.com on your computer screen. Krevsky owned an art gallery in San Francisco until 2014, when the art world shifted from galleries to television screens.
“When I started in the art business, there were 32 galleries in San Francisco,” he recalled. “Now there are two or three.”
This means art is sold more often these days on the Internet, a transforming world that Krevsky finally has embraced from his Oakland residence. He no longer dons a coat and tie to entertain art buyers, for he can greet them in his pajamas if he so chooses, just by turning on his home computer.
“I can take a picture of a painting on the wall and send it to the art editor of the Los Angeles Times in 10 seconds,” he said of the impact of cyberspace on art dilettantes. “No one buys art on (physical) approval anymore. Auction houses used to sell to serious collectors and art dealers. Now these same houses are after the retail market through the computer.”
Thus Krevsky, at 83, is a veteran art dealer with a refreshing rookie’s perspective. The art game has changed, and so must he as a reborn, or designated, curator. But his passion for art hasn’t ebbed.

and Krevsky Fine Art.
“This show has excited me more than I have been in years,” he said.” I can use this new technique. I hope the response still is good.”
It will be if art aficionados turn on their TV sets and see what Krevsky has to offer this time, which should please them immensely.
There is a painting of the young Babe Ruth that will grab them, likewise a smiling Joe DiMaggio profiled as a young Yankee. Another favorite is a group painting of Jackie Robinson, Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella of the Brooklyn Dodgers, together with Larry Doby of the then Cleveland Indians — the first African Americans to play in their respective leagues.
There are a wide range of paintings of ballplayers from the 1800s through Willie Mays and others of recent vintage. But if you want something more personal, Krevsky may invite you to a special room in his house where there are actual paintings of Buster Posey, Tim Lincecum, Ted Williams, etc.
| |
Lawrence Ferlinghetti at Shea Stadium by Christopher Felver.

Krevsky laments colleges who no longer offer art and music appreciation classes, let alone those amassing closed art galleries such as his on Geary Street. But he’s still a passionate baseball fan, who’s planning another upcoming spring training visit, this time to Florida.
In Krevsky's mind, although he is admittedly biased, he believes baseball art is the best kind of sports art.
“it’s very personal,” he explained. “Going to a baseball game is like going to a symphony — the color, the crowd, the strategy. The grass of the field reminds me of when I played first base in high school.”
Add the pull of the game, and Krevsky still is that same teenager now turned octogenarian, who has learned to “Play Ball” artistically on the Internet.

Cal Prevails Against Local Rival
by Jenny Kim
| |
California's No. 7 women’s gymnastics team took down rival
No. 22 Stanford at Haas Pavilion on Saturday, January 28 with a
score of 197.525-196.075.
Both teams have had a strong start for the opening of their seasons, with the Golden Bears winning the Super 16 and Wasatch Classic, and the Cardinal placing first in their Super 16 as well.
The meet began with Stanford on the bars and Cal on the vault. Despite Cal's Emjae Frazier, a talented freshman scoring a 9.95, which eventually won her the vault competition, Stanford edged ahead in the first rotation, 49.225-49.100, with solid performances from Brenna Neault and Ira Alexeeva.
However, by the second rotation Cal narrowly took the lead on the bars. Both Maddie Williams and Andi Li, the No. 1 bars competitor in the country, scored a 9.95 for Cal. Li later placed first for the bars competition.
The third rotation highlighted Cal’s consistent beam scoring with Mya Lauzon setting the program record at 9.95. California’s lead became more comfortable as they entered the final rotation, 148.125-147.675. It came down to Stanford relying on their beam performances before the closing score.
Claire Dean scored her career high of 9.9 for the Cardinal, but with a slip from Brenna Neault and a fall from Chloe Widner, the Golden Bears secured a win. Andi Li, Mya Lauzon, and Emjae Frazier all scored a 9.925, finishing off Cal’s set of strong floor performances. Andi Li went on to win the floor competition as well as the all-around events, proving her dominance and consistency for the Golden Bears' team.

Winter Quarter 2023 -- BUS 119
Title: Make Sense of the Madness:
The Evolving Business of College Athletics
Instructor -- Andy Dolich
The business of college athletics is booming. Close to 2,000 athletic departments throughout the U.S. generate $25.5 billion in media rights while attracting over 190 million enthusiastic, ticket-buying fans. This industry is evolving real-time in increasingly complex ways. The recent news that USC and UCLA are leaving the Pac-12 for the Big Ten Conference has created waves of uncertainty and speculation about the future. Just a year ago, college athletes were first permitted to profit from the rights for their Name, Image, or Likeness (NIL) while on the playing fields of their schools. What do these seismic changes mean for college athletes, administrators, and fans now and
in the future?
This course examines the business of college sports past,
present and future.
Session One -- Introduction on the Business of College Sports
Session Two -- Overview of the changes in the Pac-12 and beyond -- Ted Robinson
Session Three -- Economics -- Dr. Dan Rascher
Session Four -- The Media -- Jon Wilner
Session Five -- Athletes and coaches - Ben Braun
Session Six -- Final Round -- Table with representatives of involved
constituencies.
Sessions will include interactive discussions from industry experts.
Students will leave this course with insights into the revolutionary changes affecting the business of college sports.

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo in the state of the state speech on Mon., Jan 23, 2023 at the Assembly Chamber at the Legislature in Carson City. Lombardo is open to financing an Oakland A’s move
to Las Vegas but without using public funds.

Latest on A’s Staying or Moving Saga; Nev. Gov Lombardo open to A’s move to Vegas
by Amaury Pi-Gonzalez
| |
OAKLAND – In November 2022, the voters of the State of Nevada elected Joe Lombardo (Republican) to be their next governor over Steve Sisolak (Democrat) who had told the Oakland A’s that the state will not be raising money so the A’s can build a new stadium in
Las Vegas.
However, current governor Joe Lombardo and the A’s recently met and discussed what options the team had in regards to public-private partnership opportunities. According to the Las Vegas Review Journal, Lombardo on Wednesday night through a spokesperson said that although he isn’t in favor of creating a new tax to lure a professional team to the state, there could be other avenues to entice an interested franchise.”
The Baseball Commissioner, who is in favor of the A’s leaving Oakland because he doesn’t see a way the city of Oakland can keep the team, also met with the new elected governor who “hinted at and have chatted with the A’s about what remains to be seen,” according to the governor’s spokesperson. The A’s, however, “appear to have zeroed in on a potential Las Vegas site.”
The A’s have been looking at potential sites in Las Vegas: the Las Vegas Festival Grounds on the north end of The Strip and the other one, the Tropicana site on the south end. Earlier this month a spokesperson for Phil Ruffin, a casino magnate, said there had been no recent talks between him and the A’s regarding the Festival Grounds site.
Next, the Bally’s Corporation president George Papanier, in charge of the company’s casino operation, confirmed that talks between them and the A’s on the Tropicana site “were ongoing.”
We could have Breaking News this year. Why? Because this cannot go forever. This was one of the lines from Major Bowes Original Amateur Hour which was a radio show which ran from 1934-1948, when it made the transition to television as the Ted Mack Original Amateur Hour and ran until 1970. It goes like this: “Round and round it goes, where does she stops, nobody knows.”

The Sanctum Revisited:
The Menu of Champions
Sports Today has occasionally released information on
The Sanctum, the highly secretive laboratory located deep within the Chase Center and utilized to help secure
W's NBA Championships.
But those who work quietly behind the court deal with much more than massive amounts of data and statistics. They have studied and honed Diet and Fitness to dramatically improve nutrition and performance and to excite the players by inclusion of their names into
The Menu of Champions.
This Haiku reflects the thoughts behind the new Menu and its balance of vitamins, taste and je ne sais quoi. Efforts have begun to allow this Menu to be delivered on the road,
as well as at Chase.
A couple of quick notes: As to the customary appetizer-salads served at fine restaurants, the W's have two (2) Greens, Draymond and JaMychal, hence the plural. For the main course, only in San Francisco can an international Indian dish be transformed with Italian gusto. Sounds delicious! For dessert and snacks, 'PBJ' reflects one of America's favorite foods, Peanut Butter and Jelly, (for Patrick Baldwin Jr., who
just learned of his new nickname). The effects of these
Warriors-only dishes will soon be obvious to Fans.

Super Bowl LVII will be only the 14th match-up
between No. 1-seeded teams.
The last time two No. 1-seeded teams met, the Philadelphia Eagles were the No. 1 seed from the NFC and the New England Patriots were the No. 1 seed from the AFC. The Eagles beat the Patriots 41-33.
The Eagles and Chiefs are in ending a five-year drought. All this info is from The Sporting News.
Which Super Bowl featured the two lowest-seeded teams, technically making it the worst Super Bowl ever played? Hint: It was not that long ago!

The Goddess Rules and Football is the Ritual that Honors Her
by Howard Pearlstein
Ok, this may sound strange but you’ll see what I mean after I tell you the story. (Disclosure – I always loved mythology, reading about it as I grew up, as did my wife, Jane, so…)
The 49ers first super bowl, 1982, a party to watch the game in a home with a “giant” 52-inch screen, great sound, chairs set up for the guests, munchies abounding and the pre-game on the air. There it was - Bubba Paris' ass - life size! Maybe even bigger! All of us cheering the sight of that beloved player prodigious presence. Red and gold, all of us – friends and relatives -- gathered together for the familiar winter ritual.
And then a woman stood up and PRONOUNCED her opinion in a way that told us that hers were the only ones in the world that mattered/.
She said: “As a devotee of the Goddess, I find all this hitting and shoving and patting on the ass quite disagreeable.”
With my usual tactlessness, I just said it: “Hey -- we have been devotees of the goddess since long before it became a shiny thing for cocktail parties. And I find it amazing that you don’t recognize those men are servants of the Goddess, the ithyphallic warriors who must shed their blood into the ground to guarantee the crops will grow in the spring. It’s the ritual of the Horned God, who is the Goddess’ main squeeze.” (“You gotta be a football hero, to get along with the beautiful girls.” -- Sherman, Fields, and Lewis,1933)
To be honest, I never thought of football that way before, but I realized that’s why the game has to be played through autumn into winter, as the days get shorter and colder and darker, to bring back the sun. (Sorry USFL -- starting the season In April is for baseball and soccer. The Goddess demands a dark time blood sport, they must water the grass with their blood – and that’s why it has to be actual grass, not plastic turf.)
And of course, the game has all the ritualistic aspects. It's thoroughly pagan - banners and flags, intoxication by assorted means, screaming and shouting and loud roars of delight and despair, music and pageantry; wild emotional roller coasters, passionate advocacy, animal totems worshipped and invoked for their primal power, and, of course, cheering cuties wearing nearly nothing despite the cold wiggling and jumping in the tradition promised to the heroes -- Hindu Apsaras, Persian houris, Valkyrie Beauties -- voluptuous dark-eyed young women who await the righteous in paradise -- Roman nymphs, Greek heterae, harem girls, temptresses.
It's the ritual of the autumn fading into the dark of winter, and it predates written history. We know it in our DNA.
The critics say, "It's warlike. Even the language is warlike. It encourages war." Well, the history of humankind strongly suggests that we no more need encouragement to go to war than do teenagers need availability of condoms to think about sex.
And the players know the Goddess is watching and do the best they can to entertain her with padding and tape and magickal slogans, and remember when tv was about the game, before the game became about TV, sideline cameras were right there. And just in case anyone was in doubt about who was being worshipped, players waved and smiled gave a cheerful, "Hi Mom."
(Portions of this were originally published, in different form in Crapshoot, 1/8/2009)

Howard Pearlstein has been a few places and done a few things.
An old friend once said, "Howard, you live your life like you're trying to fill in a dust jacket blurb." Well, then all I have to do is write a book that will get published.

Cal Bears Women's Gymnastics Team -- from the Autograph Collection of Rich Yee | |
There were some incredible performances at the women’s gymnastics meet between Stanford and Cal on Saturday, January 28. Right after the competition the Cal team gathered in a room for a meet-and-greet with all the fans. I found myself waiting in line with dozens of little girls who hope to someday become gymnasts themselves. The Cal team, including Head Coach Justin Howell, signed this team poster for me and I got a close-up look at their Pac12 Championship ring that was presented today for last year’s tournament.

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Sophomore guard Brandin Podziemski had one of his best games in a Bronco Uniform on Saturday afternoon, scoring a career-high 38 points -- his third point outing of the season.
Unfortunately for Santa Clara men's basketball it wasn't enough as Pacific, the top 3-point shooting team in the WCC, did what they do best by knocking down 17 treys, which proved to be too much down the stretch. The Broncos fell 95-89, breaking a five-game win streak over the Tigers, and dropped to 16-7, 4-4 on the year.

Many people -- maybe even you -- have been getting out on their bikes more during Shelter-in-Place. "Check for Bikes" clings and bumper stickers are great ways to keep bicyclists safer out there on the road by promoting awareness by drivers to share the road. Keep safe out there and keep your neighbors safe by using or passing along vinyl clings for inside a car window or windshield and 4" circular bumper stickers. We have Youth and Spanish versions, too!
